Poetry Friday + 2017 Progressive Poem of Kidlitosphere

The usual Poetry Friday frolic is collected
today at Dori Reads.
. . . .

We are just shy of the half-way point
in April & Nattional Poetry Month. Lucious links of the 2017 menu are
at Jama’s Alphabet Soup.
It’s a bodacious buffet!
I will tip you off to
Poetry Mosaic.
Take off your shoes, put up your feet & allow the poets on stage there to
entertain you with their readings. It’s among the wonderful new additions to the month.

Back here at Bookseedstudio’s Friday the 14th’s day in
the National Poetry Month Progressive Poem of
Kidlitosphere, I am
sculpting in the meandering
playground of words. We are creating
together but separately, smoothly, sweetly,
a new poem. Makes me giddy!  Yesterday’s mighty fine strong line from Margaret Simon/
Reflections on the Teche, officially known as line 13, needs a neighbor. So line 14 arrives:

Shiver me. Look who’s here. Must I disappear?

See if you think that fits
as the poem-to-date appears a bit further, below.

As always, we are soothingly stage-directed
by Progressive Poem pixie & perpetrator
Irene Latham at Live Your Poem. (Who quilted/created
our lovely logo.)
Handsprings are boing boing boinging
all around for her idea & influence.
Enjoy the dragonwords
and when this is titled at day 30
perhaps you’ll dare read it to a
captive
castle
audience?

Untitled 2017 Progressive Poem In Progress

I’m fidget, friction, ragged edges—
I sprout stories that frazzle-dazzle,
stories of castles, of fires that crackle,
with dragonwords that smoke and sizzle.

But edges sometimes need sandpaper,
like swords need stone and clouds need vapour.
So I shimmy out of my spurs and armour
facing the day as my fickle, freckled self.

I thread the crowd, wear freedom in my smile,
and warm to the coals of conversation.
Enticed to the stage by strands of story,
I skip up the stairs in anticipation.

Flip around, face the crowd, and freeze!
Shiver me. Look who’s here. Must I disappear?

. . . .

Now here’s the wand hand off to Brenda,
at Friendly Fairy Tales,
who will weave her magic over words for day 15.

    • Thank you with a box of fat jumbo crayons on top, Amy.
Isn’t the tension-gift of our line leaders enough to make us nibble nibble x-tra chocolate?
And color me pink with anticipation for day 24 – whatever will that line be? Squee!

  1. Oh, Jan – of COURSE you brought us a crystalline moment of possibilities – and just enough danger, and fun! Your pen is a swash-buckling sword, my friend. Thanks for sharing your gifts. Now I’m off to see what Brenda has come up with – this poem is SO up her alley. And it’s surely my favorite so far!

    • Aww….Robyn! Big appreciations. And how could this year’s poem not be shimmering with the clever surprises of each & every day.
Writers must have powdered with pixie dust & run under the golden idea-sprinkler.
      All wonderful in every way.
Sending xox hug high-fives for day 25! 🙂

  2. Oh, this is fun! I’ve been away from the Progressive Poem for several days and just came back. Love this line–could be stage fright OR that someone dangerous or intimidating is in the audience. Can’t wait to see where this goes next! Hooray for conflict!

    • Yes, Mary Lee. It’s like being offstage before a huge crowd and then the lights are dimmed and the stage director cues your appearance, all sweaty palms and twisted tum-tum that you carry out to the world . . .

  3. Oh, I love that we’re inside the head of our fickle, freckled narrator. This is so much fun! And now I’m off to see if Brenda’s line is up. Amazed that you waited until all the lines were assembled before reading the poem. Enjoy the rest of the daily journey!

    • I’m flitting over to Friendly Fair Tales this morning myself.
      (Slept late for us . . .)
And I may have misrepresented myself. In the 13 days leading up, I peeked at one pal’s line, which gifted us dragonwords.
I also enjoyed seeing one line before that. I wanted to stay away day after day after day after day . . . Now I can visit each morning!

  4. I imagine all of us are turning handsprings over your line, Jan! You have brought in a new question of what kind of “shivers” they are, the good ones of anticipation, or those others of fear. Terrific addition!

    • Thank you so much, springy Linda B!

I am shivering in anticipation of tomorrow.
Of course I know my intent but that’s the beauty of the hand-off.
It’s up to the next line leader to link us in a lively way . . .

  5. Hi Jan,
    Love your line….
I love how this keeps us in suspense. What is happening? What is next. I am going to share this with 3rd graders this morning.

      • Many thumbs up from my 3rd graders this am (well I am a sub), but I will be with them for at least 3 weeks at end of year while teacher is out. Longer if needed, so this was an important morning. I brought in the artillery: poetry! I had books galore at the ready (will bring them back), a new box of 64 Crayola crayons to Write the Rainbow like Amy Ludwig VanDerwater and Margaret Simon’s students did, taught them Cinquain pattern and then let them write. But before that I shared the idea of the Progressive Poem and read it to them. They were eager and interested and want to know what will happen next. So when vacation is over I will go back and share, but am sending the teacher (my good friend) the link so she can check it out, too. Bravo ! To all. I like your idea of waiting until the day before your line to read the poem and see where it was. Interesting. Not sure I could wait. I am shivering here, in calmer anticipation !! And enjoying our coals of conversation. So much fun.

      • Hello Sub. Teacher/Magician Janet F!

Such a pleasure to enjoy this 3rd Grade update as a lunchtime treat.

Your teaching pal & her students are fortunate she selected you.
Please let them know their thumbs up are a joy to think about.

I am excited about the two crayon color projects too.
I am partial to an orange crayon (living in Florida 🙂

Many many thanks for visiting along in the 2017 Progressive Poem!

Happy weekend & happy spring break!

  6. Art Game, Jane. Did you kids give it a a name? For some reason I’m thinking Dictionary, but that is where you draw based upon the name of a card you pick. And I agree. each line in this year’s P.P. is such fun to see unfold.

    • This year’s is
      a barrel of monkeys
      pick up sticks
and side walk hop scotch with chalk of great colors, Irene.Look what YOU spun into the world.
I have mainly avoided checking in for each day’s line, in order to more enjoy the wow! factor when
it grew time to add a line. Now I’m ready for the smile of looking in, each morning. Can’t wait for
      Brenda’s addition.
Big hugs & a game of “Go, Fish!”

  7. I love this progressive poem! When I was a child my friends and I used to play a game where we each took turns drawing a small part of a picture, playing off each other until we created something hilarious and wonderful. There’s something so exciting about creatively collaborating and contributing to something that changes, grows and comes to life

    • Hello Jane, today, Art Game, Jane.
Did your kids give it a name? For some reason I’m thinking Dictionary, but that is where you draw based upon the name of a card you pick. It sounds inventive & crazy good times.

    • YOU are fancy free with titles, I see, Linda!
I’m grinning with that p.w. one.
And we are all thinking of Brenda, working her magic as I know she will.
30 day + 30 unknown lines until each is revealed = a fun poetry puzzle.
